Gauforum Weimar

Location:

Weimar is a city in the east part of Germany, famous because of Schiller and Goethe.

History:

Op Mai 30th 1933, Fritz Sauckel, Gauleiter (Leader of the Gau of province) of Thüringen advised to build a large centre for the nazi party, Deutschen Arbeiter Front (DAF) and the Reichstatthalter in Weimar. On July 1 1935 Hitler and Speer agreed to build such a complex. The complex was designed by Hermann Giesler. The building started on July 4th 1936, 10 years after the 2nd Reichsparteitag in Weimar in 1926.

The Gauforum was never completed.

Current status:

Shortly after the war, the square in the middle of Gauforum was used as parade ground for the Soviet Army. Between de 1950's and 1989 it was transformed to offices, a school and a store. After the reunification of both Germanys, it is not clear what should be done with the remains of the former Nazi building.
